Royal Berkshire Hospital in the UK will receive £5m grant from the Carbon and Energy Fund to install solar panels, wind turbines and a heat-driven mini power station.
The hospital will be one of five to receive NHS funding to produce its own electricity.
The programme is expected to help the hospital to save between £500,000 and £1m a year in electricity bills and reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by about 3,200t.
The work at the hospital is expected to start in early 2012, pending planning permission from Reading Borough Council.
The project includes fitting solar panels onto the maternity and endoscopy departments and installing wind turbines above one of the hospital’s entrances.
The other hospitals to receive funding are Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, Kent and Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury and Royal Wolverhampton in the West Midlands.
