US-based teaching hospital Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) has upgraded its computed radiography (CR) based rooms with the installation of 11 DX-D Retrofit digital radiography (DR) systems and five wireless DX-D 100 mobile DR systems, designed by Agfa HealthCare.
The DR systems have been designed to increase efficiency within the radiology department by providing instant image review, while eliminating the need for time consuming processing of medical screen film cassettes.
According to Agfa HealthCar, the new DR systems generate digital X-ray images that can be shared and accessed within the patient’s electronic health record (EHR).
Designed as a vendor-neutral upgrade solution, DX-D Retrofit provides DR workflow and better image, and handles many applications including paediatric for NICUs.
The DX-D 100 system, which wirelessly connects to the hospital information system and contains on-board dose management tools, has been designed to capture instant images at the patient bedside.
LLUMC Diagnostic Radiology system manager Todd Thall said: “The benefits of DR technology, including better quality images at low doses and faster X-ray processing, are well known within the radiology department at LLUMC.

By GlobalData“For us, it was not a question of if we wanted to upgrade to DR, but instead a question of how we could upgrade and when we would have the financial means to do so.
“Agfa HealthCare’s digital radiography upgrade programme has made it possible for us to sustain our existing financial model while proactively upgrading to the best technology available for our patients. Our transition to DR is literally paying for itself.”
The upgrade to DR has resulted in the increase of patient engagement, comfort, and satisfaction at LLUMC. It also allows radiologist to view the X-ray image seconds after the exposure is made.
With the upgrade, the patients can also be easily adjusted for taking any further images or modifications, eliminating the discomfort and time required to take additional X-rays.
In addition, Agfa HealthCare’s MUSICA image processing software is used with the entire DR product line for capturing better quality images.
Agfa HealthCare North America DR business director Ueli Laupper said: “Though the benefits of DR are widely known, many hospitals are challenged to find cost-effective ways to upgrade their legacy radiation technologies.
“We developed the unique cost structure of the digital radiography upgrade programme to allow hospitals like Loma Linda University Medical Center to keep up with the evolution of healthcare technology by implementing the most cutting edge DR products without having to use any capital investment, but instead paying for it with the operational cost savings achieved by using cassette-less DR technology.
“We are very honoured to have been selected by Loma Linda and are pleased to be working with them throughout the evolution of their imaging technologies.”
