NHS Scotland has implemented the Rhapsody Enterprise Master Person Index (EMPI) solution, marking a significant step in enhancing healthcare data connectivity and patient care.
Rhapsody EMPI, which has been rolled out collaboratively by Wipro UK and NHS National Services Scotland, has been developed by global digital health enablement company Rhapsody.
It has now become a key component of NHS Scotland’s digital infrastructure, enabling a comprehensive view of patient health journeys.
NHS Scotland, which employs around 140,000 staff members within seven special boards, 14 territorial NHS boards, and one public health body, partnered with Wipro UK to replace its old application with Rhapsody’s custom EMPI solution.
This collaboration has paved the way for more efficient updates and scalability in-line with the growing demands of NHS Scotland’s digital healthcare services.
Wipro UK & Ireland managing director Omkar Nisal said: “We successfully completed the transformation and migration of NHS Scotland’s legacy systems to a new platform on the Cloud.

By GlobalData“We see it not just as a technological improvement, but as a commitment to the future of healthcare in Scotland. This transformation symbolises our dedication to innovation, efficiency, and, ultimately, the wellbeing of patients.”
Rhapsody EMPI is a cloud-based solution, which is hosted on Microsoft Azure and helps in streamlining the patient identification process across various healthcare systems and organisations.
This advancement aims to minimise errors and bolster the trust in the quality of identity data.
As a result, NHS Scotland can promote health equity, offer more personalised care, as well as support public health initiatives more effectively.
NHS National Services Scotland Digital and Security director Steven Flockhart said: “Keeping all healthcare information related to each person updated, complete, and correct is a critical factor in supporting safe, effective, and efficient patient care.
“The capability of Rhapsody EMPI to enable ease of use, whilst ensuring connected, secure, and comprehensive patient data, is helping support decision making across NHS Scotland boards in a whole manner of ways, supporting the ability to deliver good patient outcomes.”
