The National Health Service (NHS) has confirmed the proposed site locations for two new hospitals, which are set to replace Royal Preston Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary.
This development is part of a broader national investment initiative through the New Hospital Programme, aimed at enhancing healthcare infrastructure and patient care with advanced facilities and technologies.
NHS Foundation Trust Lancashire Teaching Hospitals chief executive Silas Nicholls said: “Securing our preferred site is a huge step forward in our bid to create a state-of-the-art new hospital to replace Royal Preston Hospital.
“This would provide major trauma and specialist services to the population of Lancashire and South Cumbria and acute hospital services to Central Lancashire.”
The site earmarked for Royal Preston Hospital replacement is situated between Stanifield Lane and Wigan Road, just south of Stoney Lane in Farington, close to M65 West.
It is currently farmland, surrounded by residential, commercial, and retail zones, with proximity to major motorways such as the M6 and M65.

By GlobalDataMeanwhile, the proposed site location to replace Royal Lancaster Infirmary is Bailrigg East, which is located to the north of Lancaster University. This site is adjacent to residential areas to the north, with the M6 motorway and A6 road providing accessible routes.
Plans for upgrading the infrastructure of Furness General Hospital are also underway and will be communicated in the future.
The NHS remains open to considering alternative sites for the new hospitals, which would undergo a thorough evaluation process similar to that of the current proposals.
Until the new facilities are operational, the existing Royal Preston Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary will continue to provide services.
The NHS in Lancashire and South Cumbria has secured these proposed sites for the new hospitals, which are part of the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.
However, the NHS welcomes suggestions for alternative locations, ensuring that any new proposals will meet the established assessment criteria.
