Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has opened the Kenneth C Griffin Surgical Tower, a paediatric surgical facility at its campus in Miami, Florida.

The five-story facility spans 131,000ft² and houses 18 inpatient rooms for surgical patients, as well as 12 operating suites equipped with the technology to support complex paediatric surgeries.

The operating suites cover 800ft² in total and are designed with features such as adjustable lighting, UV sterilisation and hypothermic technology to regulate patient temperatures.

They also feature intraoperative monitoring and streaming capabilities for educational purposes.

Clinicians have access to essential information through in-room monitors, which can also be used to display movies or virtual reality games to reduce patient anxiety before anaesthesia.

When combined with a surgical navigation system, the StealthStation S8 enables real-time surgical precision and can reduce radiation exposure by up to 70%.

For minimally invasive surgery the facility features the Zeiss microscope robotic visualisation system and the DaVinci robotic system.

The facility offers trauma care, cancer interventions, and reconstructive surgeries such as cleft lip-and-palate repair, as well as procedures for orthopaedic, spine, brain and heart conditions.

It is named in honour of Kenneth C Griffin, the founder and CEO of Citadel and founder of Griffin Catalyst, who donated $25m to support the facility and the future of paediatric surgical care.
