The New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII) in the US has partnered with Cognome to use AI tools to deliver clinical intelligence.

This partnership will transform patient care using AI and machine learning (ML) capabilities.

It aims to harness Cognome’s ethical AI tools, created within two academic healthcare systems, alongside NJII’s professional services to offer operational efficiency and improved outcomes.

Healthcare Innovation Solutions (HCIS), a NJII subsidiary focused on quality and performance improvement, will introduce these AI solutions to the market.

Emerging from a joint venture between Montefiore Health System and the University of Texas, Houston, Cognome provides advanced AI and ML models, including the AI governance platform ExplainerAI, designed specifically for healthcare applications.

NJII AI and machine learning vice-president Tom Villani said: “All of our AI models integrate seamlessly with EHRs, delivering real-time insights to physicians. The Sepsis reduction model has demonstrated the lowest flag rate in the industry.

“AutoChart AI reduces manual chart abstraction by over 90%, providing significant ROI through operational efficiencies and prospective attribution.”

The ExplainerAI platform, grounded in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) AI Governance framework, aims to enhance transparency and reduce bias in AI models.

It also adheres to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework, which emphasises the importance of privacy, auditability, cybersecurity, and compliance, including for third-party AI models.

Cognome CEO James Green said: “Partnering with NJII combines our 15 years of building proven AI and ML capabilities with their deep knowledge and collaboration throughout NJ’s healthcare ecosystem.

“Size and diversity in patient data are the ‘fuel’ for intelligent, accurate, and responsible AI models.”

The partnership is set to unite various healthcare delivery stakeholders such as technology leaders, researchers, AI and ML practitioners, and operational and quality teams partnering on high-value use cases.

NJII will also contribute data science expertise and custom model development services, catering to the advanced analytic and AI solution needs in healthcare.
