The state government of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has announced a A$1.9m ($1.18m) investment to upgrade hospitals and health facilities in the Far West Local Health District.

This is part of a wider investment by the Minns Labor Government, which is committing almost A$12m to 61 projects under the Regional Health Minor Works Program.

Broken Hill Hospital will receive A$500,000 for a three-phased upgrade of its Central Sterilising Service Department’s Electronic Tracking System and Instrument Management System.

Wilcannia Multi-Purpose Service (MPS) will be given A$250,000 for critical safety improvements, including new security lighting, cameras and duress alarms.

A further A$250,000 has been earmarked for Broken Hill Hospital to acquire a Transperineal Biopsy of the Prostate ultrasound machine and biopsy probe, aiding the urology service in diagnosis.

In addition, Wilcannia MPS is due to receive A$220,000 to convert existing spaces into toilet and shower facilities for emergency department and palliative care patients.

Other facilities due to receive funding include White Cliffs Health Service, Menindee Health Service, and Tibooburra Health Service.

The Far West Local Health District aims to complete these projects over the next two financial years.

Regional Health Minister Ryan Park said: “The Minns Labor Government is committed to investing in upgrading health facilities to support better health outcomes for rural and regional communities.

“This government’s $1.9m investment as part of the Rural Minor Works Program will allow Far West Local Health District to carry out critical upgrades to equipment and health facilities.

“The programme is one of a number of investments the Minns Labor Government is making to strengthen rural and regional health services, so people have access to the best possible care close to home.”

The NSW government recently announced a 12-month trial of body-worn cameras for hospital security personnel with the aim of improving patient, staff and visitor safety.
