The Palestinian American Medical Association (PAMA) and the United Nations Development Programme/Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP/PAPP) have announced a $3.4m project to provide emergency support to Al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital in the Gaza Strip.
The two-year initiative is designed to improve the hospital’s resilience and operational capacity in the face of significant challenges.
PAMA president Mustafa Musleh said: “As the Palestinian American Medical Association, we are deeply humbled and honoured to be part of this essential lifeline for Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza.
“PAMA’s mission is driven by the belief that healthcare is a human right and by our profound dedication to serve in times of crisis and the hard path to recovery.”
The ongoing conflict has left Gaza’s health sector in ruins, with more than 60% of facilities destroyed or inoperable by September 2024.
Only 17 of 36 hospitals remain partially functional, leading to a dire situation where rising injuries and shortages of essential supplies have overwhelmed hospitals such as Al-Ahli.

By GlobalDataThe partnership aims to address these critical issues by enhancing access to trauma services and improving Al-Ahli Hospital’s ability to provide essential healthcare.
The project will involve collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Health Cluster, ensuring alignment with national and international health strategies.
Key components of the project include the rehabilitation of the ICU and operating rooms, deployment of health staff, and capacity building for medical personnel.
It also aims to create job opportunities for health workers and ensure the continuity of essential health services in the region.
UNDP/PAPP special representative Sarah Poole said: “The agreement represents our long-standing support for Gaza’s health sector together with partners, especially through a lens of emergency employment to support the continuation of health services in the context of the emergency response, as well as recovery efforts as soon as possible.”
