Stanford Health Care (SHC) – Stanford Medicine in the US has implemented Microsoft subsidiary Nuance Communications’ clinical documentation solution, Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Copilot.
DAX Copilot is based on Nuance’s broader Dragon Medical solutions suite, enabling healthcare organisations to scale up the adoption of new AI-powered clinical documentation applications using existing investments in the Nuance Dragon Medical platform.
Dragon Medical One is a cloud-based speech recognition solution that serves as a workflow assistant for documenting clinical visits in the EHR.
The deployment of DAX Copilot aims to alleviate the administrative burden on healthcare providers, which is a known factor contributing to physician burnout.
It is expected to expand access to personalised, high-quality care by automating clinical documentation during patient exams.
Nuance’s advanced conversational and generative AI technologies enable DAX Copilot to automatically and securely draft clinical summaries of telehealth conversations or exam rooms within seconds.

By GlobalDataThese summaries are ready for immediate review and entry into the electronic health record (EHR), significantly reducing the time physicians spend on documentation.
This efficiency also allows physicians to see more patients each day.
The latest initiative underscores SHC commitment to leverage technology for optimising administrative processes, enhancing the quality of care, increasing access to healthcare services, and educating future clinicians in precision care.
A preliminary survey of SHC clinicians, who have used DAX Copilot, revealed that 96% found it easy to use, and 78% noted it sped up clinical notetaking.
Around two-thirds of the respondents acknowledged time savings due to DAX Copilot.
SHC and Stanford School of Medicine chief information officer and associate dean Dr Michael A. Pfeffer said: “By automating clinical documentation, we can increase efficiency while improving the quality of the clinical data captured during each encounter.
“Backed by Nuance and Microsoft, DAX Copilot has shown significant value for our physicians who used the solution during our initial pilot deployment. Patients whose providers participated in the pilot also appreciated having their doctor’s full and undivided attention during clinic or telehealth visits.”
In June 2023, University Hospitals in Cleveland tapped Nuance for its patient engagement solutions.
