Australian company Stephen Edwards Constructions has secured a contract to construct the new Warrawong Community Health Centre in New South Wales (NSW), through a competitive tender process.

The new health centre, a component of the A$780m ($507.5m) New Shellharbour Hospital and Integrated Services Project, will be built on the Port Kembla Hospital site.

NSW Regional Health Minister Ryan Park said: “I’m delighted we have reached this significant milestone for the new Warrawong Community Health Centre.

“It is terrific to see this project moving to the next phase, bringing the community one step closer to receiving important community-based health services within a new, purpose-built facility.

“Having services including child and family health, Aboriginal maternal infant health services, and drug and alcohol services all under the one roof will enhance accessibility and support the health needs of the local community.”

The Warrawong Community Health Centre aims to enhance healthcare services in the region, addressing the needs of the community with a suite of services.

The new facility will offer child and family health, Aboriginal maternal-infant health, community nursing, mental health, sexual health, drug and alcohol services, as well as an equipment loan pool.

The inclusion of specialised services such as the Binji and Boori programme underscores the project’s commitment to catering to the diverse health requirements of the local population.

With the contract now awarded, the focus has moved to finalising the design of the centre.

Construction is set to begin in the upcoming months and the centre is anticipated to be fully operational by 2026.

Member of Wollongong Paul Scully said: “I have advocated for a new community health centre in Warrawong for a long time and I am excited that this project is moving to the construction phase.

“The new Warrawong Community Health Centre will provide essential community-based health services, such as community nursing, child and family health, and mental health support.

“The new Warrawong Community Health Centre will also help drive many job opportunities for the Illawarra region.”
