Tata Trusts is upgrading four government hospitals in India, two each in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, into Covid-19 treatment centres.

The facilities will include in-patient as well as out-patient wings. They are permanent and are intended to support health care in their locations.

In Maharashtra, the facilities are a 50-bed hospital at Sangli and a 106-bed hospital at Buldhana. Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh, Tata Trusts will be upgrading a 168-bed hospital at Gautam Buddha Nagar and a 106-bed facility at Gonda.

The facilities in Uttar Pradesh are in alliance with a partner organisation. The move to upgrade existing infrastructure is intended to allow speed and help leverage available capabilities and services.

Tata Trusts aim to complete the upgrade of the hospitals by 15 June 2020. Each hospital will have critical care capabilities, minor operation theatres, basic pathology and radiology, dialysis and blood storage facilities, and telemedicine units.

The upgrade follows Tata Trusts chairman Ratan Tata’s statement that “urgent emergency resources need to be deployed to cope with the needs of fighting the Covid-19 crisis, which is one of the toughest challenges the human race will face.”

The organisation will use its expertise in setting-up cancer care facilities and connected service providers to modernise these hospitals. The construction is carried out by Tata Projects  while Edifice Consultants provides the design.

In addition to hospital upgrades, the Trusts have been providing personal protection equipment (PPE), including N95/KN95 masks, surgical masks and gloves to state governments and also individual hospitals.

To date, PPE supplies have been sent to approximately 26 states and Union Territories.

Tata Trusts added: “The Trusts have also done a pan-India community outreach to induce adoption of health practices, as promoted by the Government of India, in rural areas to prevent the spread of Covid-19.”
