US-based UNC Health Pardee has unveiled plans to invest $30m to set up an inpatient adolescent behavioural health facility.

The healthcare system will refurbish 40,000ft2 of hospital area to build the new 33-bed facility.

This move is a collaborative effort with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Vaya Health, and the UNC School of Medicine.

Anticipated to open in January 2026, the new facility aims to address the lengthy wait times children and adolescents with mental health conditions currently endure, which can hinder their recovery.

The renovated space within Pardee Hospital is designed to cater to the specific needs of adolescents aged 12 to 17, who require inpatient behavioural health care.

UNC Health Pardee psychiatric and addictions therapeutic healing services (PATHS) nursing director Bridget Fluech said: “Opening adolescent psychiatric services within our community hospital in partnership with UNC Health is a critical step toward providing comprehensive and accessible care to some of our most vulnerable populations.”

According to officials, the design is based on evidence to promote recovery, featuring patient rooms, therapy spaces, and areas for recreation and education.

The collaboration with the UNC School of Medicine is said to ensure that the facility will leverage research and academic expertise.

Patients will benefit from therapies related to adolescent behavioral care, covering telehealth, digital therapeutics, and mental health apps.

The partnership also offers training opportunities for future healthcare professionals.

UNC psychiatry department chair Dr Samantha Meltzer-Brody said: ““Improving behavioural health for younger patients is a top priority for UNC Health because we recognise that it’s a major issue across North Carolina and the country.

“The partnership between UNC Health Pardee and the UNC School of Medicine represents the best of academic medicine and community health care. We continue to explore ways to expand this level of much-needed care across the state.”

The planned adolescent behavioural health facility follows the late 2023 launch of UNC Hospitals Youth Behavioural Health, a 54-bed inpatient facility in Butner, North Carolina.

This facility, also in partnership with NCDHHS, provides acute care for children and teens in psychiatric crises.

In April this year, UNC Health opened the North Carolina Surgical Hospital in Chapel Hill, US.
