The University of Utah in the US has received a $75m donation from the George S and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation to build a new hospital and medical campus in West Valley City.
This contribution will be used to construct the university’s first off-campus hospital and will serve as an expansion of healthcare services for the local communities.
The new 800,000ft² campus will be a key part of a $855m initiative by the university.
The project will not only provide medical services but also offer educational and career development opportunities in the health sector.
University of Utah Health CEO Bob Carter said: “This new campus is exciting because it will bring comprehensive, top-tier health care closer to home.
“We also see this project as key to expanding educational opportunities and helping to address our shortage of doctors, which is five times greater in western Salt Lake County than in other Wasatch Front communities.”
The new health campus will feature a 90-bed hospital and multi-speciality outpatient clinics.
These clinics will cater to a variety of medical needs, including heart care, orthopaedics, women’s health, paediatrics, general internal medicine, and urgent care.
Featuring 200 exam rooms, they are expected to accommodate more than 341,000 outpatient visits each year.
In addition to health care services, the campus will create over 2,000 new jobs in West Valley City.
Construction of the new health campus is anticipated to start in the summer, between June and August 2025, with the multi-speciality health clinic expected to be finished by 2028 and the hospital rooms by 2029.
The campus will be situated on a 22-acre site at 3750 South and 5600 West in West Valley City.
In October 2022, the University of Utah Health launched a new digital health initiative to establish the next generation of medical apps, games, and technologies.
