Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) Government has announced the commencement of planning for the Blue Mountains Hospital upgrade by appointing the lead design team to ensure quality healthcare for the local community.
An allocation of A$25m ($15.56m) from the Restart NSW Fund will deliver essential upgrades to the existing hospital while preparations for the development of a new hospital are being finalised.
The lead design team, led by Health Infrastructure, consists of architect HDR and project manager Capital Insights. Concept 2 Reality Consulting will handle cost management.
These companies were selected after a competitive tender process.
This team will collaborate with the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) to identify future health service requirements.
The initiative follows the district’s draft of the Clinical Services Plan for the region, which involved consultations with the community and healthcare professionals.

In addition, Health Infrastructure and NBMLHD are focusing on crucial upgrades to the existing hospital to support healthcare staff in delivering optimal care and improving patient experiences.
Consultations with local health staff and clinicians are ongoing to highlight the necessary improvements for the current hospital.
Upgrades are already in progress, including work on the hospital’s roof and the Central Sterilising Services Department, with more maintenance and enhancements set to follow.
Blue Mountains member Trish Doyle said: “While this planning work is carried out, I look forward to seeing construction progress on the upgrades to the hospital’s roof and Central Sterilising Services Department in the coming months.”
The NSW government will also allocate A$1.7m to upgrade hospitals and health facilities to serve North Coast communities.
Regional Health Minister Ryan Park has announced that, as a component of the Minns Labour Government’s A$12m Regional Health Minor Works Program, several projects will take place in the Northern NSW Local Health District.
