The Welsh government has confirmed that the Grange Hospital will officially open during mid-November this year, four months ahead of schedule.

Based in Cwmbran, the Grange Hospital was originally planned for opening in March this year.

It will also bring together services that were earlier provided at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport and Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny.

Inpatient beds are also available for major emergencies and complex surgery, and theatres.

During construction, the project helped to create more than 600 jobs. It is set to provide employment for over 3,000 people once it opens.

Minister for Health Vaughan Gething said: “It’s testament to the hard work of everyone involved that this has been achieved, and even more so during these challenging times.

“The new date gives us the opportunity to now include the facility in winter preparations and provide more capacity and resilience.  It can also assist with any possible future waves of the coronavirus.”

A consolidated list of services will remain at the Royal Gwent and Nevill Hall Hospitals providing inpatient and outpatient care including diagnostic tests, therapies, minor injuries treatment, and midwifery-led birthing services.

The new hospital will help respond to a potential second wave of the pandemic.
