WellSpan Health, in partnership with small-format hospital developer Emerus, has broken ground on a new hospital in the Newberry Township area of Pennsylvania, US.
The hospital is being established to enhance healthcare services in an underserved area of Pennsylvania.
Located strategically off Interstate 83, the new facility is set to operate round-the-clock and throughout the year, with an emergency department and ten inpatient beds.
The new Newberry Township Hospital is designed to offer hospital-level care in a community currently lacking sufficient medical services.
Its proximity to businesses and residential developments underscores its potential to serve the growing healthcare needs of the region.
The hospital’s small-format design promises a more accessible and efficient patient experience compared to larger, traditional hospitals, Emerus stated.

WellSpan Health Central Region senior vice-president Victoria Diamond said: “Establishing a hospital in northern York County is just one of the ways WellSpan Health is improving the health of the communities we serve.
“We are bringing 24/7 emergency and inpatient care with short wait times and onsite diagnostics, so community members no longer must travel to York or Harrisburg for high-quality care.”
The latest development is part of WellSpan’s expansion, which includes two additional hospitals set to open by late 2025.
As one of three new hospitals that WellSpan is constructing within the next two years, the Newberry Township facility is expected to significantly improve local access to healthcare.
The other two hospitals near Shrewsbury and Carlisle are also part of the initiative to expand WellSpan’s healthcare footprint.
All three hospitals are anticipated to commence operations by the end of 2025.
Emerus CEO Vic Schmerbeck said: “We are proud to partner with WellSpan, one of the nation’s leading hospital systems. We’re excited to help bring sustainable, compassionate, high-quality health care that will meet the needs of Pennsylvanians, now, and in the future.”
