WellSpan Health, in collaboration with small-format hospital developer Emerus, has commenced construction on the WellSpan Shrewsbury Hospital in the US state of Pennsylvania.
This milestone was marked by a groundbreaking ceremony.
The new hospital is being established to improve healthcare access in Pennsylvania, York County, as well as the surrounding areas.
It will operate round-the-clock, providing continuous care to patients throughout the year.
Located at 13515 Wolfe Road in New Freedom, Pennsylvania, the hospital is expected to open its doors late next year.
This site selection ensures that essential healthcare services are within reach for those living, working, or travelling in the region.

By GlobalDataDesigned with a focus on accessibility, the hospital will feature an emergency department and ten inpatient beds, in a more accessible and smaller footprint compared to traditional hospitals.
WellSpan Shrewsbury Hospital will also offer various diagnostic services such as X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, and other laboratory testing.
The emergency department of the hospital will be equipped to handle common medical emergencies, including burns, falls, infections, and injuries.
WellSpan Shrewsbury Hospital is one of three facilities Emerus and WellSpan are developing in partnership over the upcoming two years.
The collaboration between the two organisations, announced last May, aims to bring a range of medical services closer to residents in Carlisle and Newberry Township, Pennsylvania areas, where the facilities are planned to open.
All three upcoming hospitals will be fully licensed and adopt the WellSpan brand.
WellSpan and Emerus said that their collaboration reinforces the mutual commitment to deliver long-term healthcare services.
Small-format hospitals such as the Shrewsbury-based facility offer quicker patient turnaround times without compromising on service quality or scope, the companies noted.
WellSpan Health president and CEO Roxanna Gapstur said: “The new WellSpan Shrewsbury Hospital promises exceptional clinical care and experience close-to-home for this fast-growing community.”
Emerus CEO Vic Schmerbeck added: “We are proud to partner with WellSpan, one of the nation’s leading hospital systems. We’re excited to help bring sustainable, compassionate, high-quality health care that will meet the needs of Pennsylvanians, now, and in future.”
