The Government of Western Australia (WA) has finalised the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre (QEIIMC) site for the construction of the new $1.29bn (A$1.8bn) women and babies hospital.
The site for the new hospital, to be built north of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) G Block, has been selected after a comprehensive site analysis and evaluation process.
WA government selected the site due to its advantage in future-proofing the QEIIMC for 40 years, including the proposed future redevelopments of the Perth Children’s Hospital, SCGH, PathWest and teaching as well as research facilities.
Concept design phase for the new healthcare facility will begin next month. The project is expected to create more than 1,400 employment opportunities.
Works at the site are anticipated to begin next year, with the development of a detailed business case and the project definition plan due for completion by the end of this year.
Western Australia Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said: “Hundreds of thousands of Western Australians have been born at King Edward Memorial Hospital and so many of us, myself included, have delivered babies there.
