Abridge, a generative artificial intelligence (AI) service provider for clinical documentation, has reached an agreement with Riverside Health in the US for an enterprise-wide expansion.

Abridge's AI technology has been selected by Riverside Health due to its high-quality note generation and the trustworthiness of its purpose-built AI stack.

The technology, which integrates seamlessly with Epic's workflow, automates the documentation process in real-time, allowing clinicians to focus more on patient care rather than administrative tasks.

The expansion follows a successful two-month pilot and is set to streamline clinical documentation across various specialities and care settings within Riverside Health.

Following the evaluation of multiple solutions, Riverside Health has decided to implement Abridge's services across all of its care settings.

This includes emergency departments and inpatient hospitals, and also extends to medical residents and physical therapists.

The technology's ability to reduce clinicians' cognitive load and burnout was a significant factor in this decision. The burden of documentation is a major contributor to clinician burnout, which can lead to a decrease in the healthcare workforce.

Abridge CEO and founder Dr Shiv Rao said: “Regardless of care setting or speciality, all clinicians should have more time and resources to focus on doing what we love: caring for patients.

“We’ll continue to work with innovative, patient-focused systems like Riverside Health to make clinical work more efficient.”

Clinicians who used Abridge reported a 61% reduction in cognitive load and a 55% decrease in feelings of burnout.

Abridge’s Ambient documentation systems, also known as AI scribes, are designed to alleviate the documentation burden by creating clinical notes from the raw audio recorded during patient encounters.

Its approach involves mapping AI-generated summaries to verified ground truth, offering providers a reliable way to quickly trust and verify the AI's output.

This is supported by Abridge's Linked Evidence and auditable AI technology.

In July 2024, Mayo Clinic collaborated with Abridge and Epic to develop an AI documentation tool for nurses.
