The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has partnered with Abu Dhabi -based research-based academic institution Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) and AI enablement solutions provider Core42 to establish the Global AI Healthcare Academy.

In this regard, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the parties during Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week, being held from 13 to 15 May 2024.

This collaboration aims to position Abu Dhabi as a hub for technology-driven healthcare.

The academy will focus on creating an AI-skilled workforce to enhance diagnostic and operational efficiency, enhance patient care, and streamline healthcare processes.

MBZUAI public affairs and alumni relations vice-president Sultan Al Hajji said: “In addition to our recent effort in establishing the Institute of Digital Public Health, we are proud to partner with The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi in launching the new AI Healthcare Academy.

“MBZUAI will provide the Academy our world-class faculty to facilitate AI workshops and training to upskill the healthcare workforce in support of the UAE leadership’s vision to become a global hub for AI and a centre for life sciences.”

This partnership aligns with Abu Dhabi's ambition to innovate in healthcare, offering courses designed to advance the application of AI in the sector.

The initiative will leverage advanced technologies to upskill healthcare professionals, promoting innovation and global knowledge exchange. This interconnected approach is expected to lead to medical breakthroughs and better healthcare outcomes.

Furthermore, the Global AI Healthcare Academy will engage in research and innovation through MBZUAI's Institute of Digital Public Health.

The aim is to push the boundaries of knowledge and foster discoveries, with public-private partnerships ensuring sustainability and impactful innovation.

DoH Undersecretary Dr Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi said: “We are embarking on a transformative journey with MBZUAI to enhance AI capabilities across the healthcare sector for leadership, clinicians, and health administrators.

“Empowering our workforce with the latest AI technologies is vital to achieve the milestones we hope for in diagnostics and personalised medical management.

“These efforts are crucial to achieving the shift from reactive healthcare to proactive care, accelerating the future of healthcare and life sciences, thus cementing Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading destination for innovation in healthcare.”
