The Government of India has inaugurated the new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), spread across 226.84 acres in the Vijaypur area of Jammu’s Samba district.
This facility was inaugurated by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20 February and is located along National Highway 44.
AIIMS Jammu’s outpatient department is projected to serve 2,000-3,000 patients daily.
In the initial phase, the hospital will have 750 beds, including super-speciality units, 193 intensive care units, general care facilities and feature 50 departments.
The campus features a Convention Centre equipped with projection and audio-visual systems and 1,000 seats, multi-storied staff housing, a night shelter for accommodating up to 216 people, a guest house, and hostels for undergraduate/postgraduate students.
It also comprises an amphitheatre, cycling track, cricket stadium, and other sports facilities along with surface parking for around 3,284 cars.
Patients at the new facility will have access to advanced medical technologies, including nuclear medicine, 20 modular operation theatres, and round-the-clock MRI and CT services, as well as a Helipad to ensure rapid transport for trauma patients.
The hospital also has a separate two-storey, 30-bed Aayush Block.
AIIMS Jammu introduces a 'Patient Centric Hospital' concept, with amenities such as smart payment cards, an indoor navigation system and patient assistant services to improve the accessibility of the differently abled.
Within the next year, AIIMS Jammu will gradually transition to 100% digitalisation under four milestones and replace traditional paper records with electronic health records, promoting the Indian Government’s ‘Digital India’ strategy.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Modi said: “The Union Government has added 15 new AIIMS in the last ten years, including two in J&K alone. After the commissioning of AIIMS Jammu, people of Jammu will no longer have to leave for Delhi to avail specialised medical treatment, which will help them save valuable time and resources.”
AIIMS Jammu has been established as part of the government’s Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana scheme to address regional healthcare imbalances and improve the country’s medical education standards.
The government recently laid the foundation stone of AIIMS in Rewari, Haryana, India.
