Cleveland Clinic, a nonprofit multispecialty academic medical centre, has launched Ambience’s artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help minimise clinician burnout and improve patient care.
The AI platform is designed to streamline the clinical documentation and coding processes.
It is set to enhance the quality of patient-caregiver interactions and reduce administrative burdens.
Clinicians at Cleveland Clinic will gain access to an AI-powered documentation tool later this month.
This software is capable of recording patient appointments and creating detailed medical notes, which are subsequently verified by the healthcare provider and integrated into the patient's health record.
In addition, the system generates personalised after-visit summaries tailored for patients and care providers.
Cleveland Clinic chief digital officer Rohit Chandra said: “Our implementation of ambient AI technology delivers on that promise because it helps our providers fully engage with their patients, saves time, and alleviates some of their administrative burden.”
The technology will be available for providers in ambulatory settings to trial, although its use is not mandatory.
Patients will be informed prior to the use of the AI tool and have the option to decline its application.
Cleveland Clinic ran an extensive pilot programme throughout 2024 testing the AI documentation solutions across over 80 specialities and subspecialities.
Cleveland Clinic Staff enterprise chief Beri Ridgeway said: “We are committed to finding innovative ways to support our providers and reduce administrative burden and burnout while enriching patient experience.
“Our clinicians reported their enjoyment with more face-to-face patient interaction, and that the software provided detailed notes that improved care coordination across specialities. Importantly, they also felt less burnout.”
The technology is set to be introduced in phases to ambulatory providers in the US within the Cleveland Clinic network over the coming months.
