Indian healthcare conglomerate Apollo Hospitals Group has partnered with the University of Leicester in Leicester, UK, to promote international cooperation in healthcare management and data science.

The partnership is intended to strengthen existing connections between India and the UK and work on education and research programmes.

University of Leicester president and vice-chancellor Professor Nishan Canagarajah said: “Apollo is a pioneering organisation and has led the way in Asia with a number of firsts, including the first heart transplantation in 1995.

“The potential of this collaboration cannot be underestimated; we can be at the cutting edge of the degree programmes of the future, offering opportunities that will enrich the experience of students and academics in both countries, new research partnerships in precision medicine, and collaborating to find new and novel ways to solve the biggest challenges in health.”

The University of Leicester is known for its expertise in respiratory, cardiovascular and diabetes research.

It is one of only 20 UK institutions to have been awarded £26m ($31.42m) in funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research.

This funding has supported clinical research in various health areas, including cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases and cancer prevention.

The university is also launching a £10m initiative to improve healthcare outcomes for individuals with multiple long-term conditions and establish an international centre for managing such conditions.

Apollo Hospitals Group vice chairperson Preetha Reddy said: “We are delighted to have this Memorandum of Understanding in place with the University of Leicester to explore the creation of education programmes, cutting-edge research and global mobility opportunities for Indian students to excel in their area of interest.

“Working with the University of Leicester builds on the legacy of collaboration between India and the UK and could lead to finding newer solutions to tackle global healthcare challenges while addressing the shortage of skilled workforce in India and the UK.”
