Apollo Multispecialty Hospitals, part of India’s Apollo Hospitals Enterprise, has acquired a partially constructed hospital in Sonarpur, Kolkata, in the Indian state of West Bengal.

The acquired property was owned by Future Oncology Hospital and Research Centre.

This transaction included a partly built hospital building with a built-up area of around 1,74,000ft² on 1.4 acres of land.

Apollo closed the deal, paying a consideration of Rs1.02bn in cash. The hospital chain financed the transaction using its internal accruals.

This acquisition marks the group's second hospital in Kolkata and its fifth in the eastern region of India.

Apollo managing director Suneeta Reddy said: “For over 20 years, consumers in Kolkata and the north-east have trusted Apollo as their care provider of choice due to our unique combination of cutting-edge technology, exceptional clinical talent, and compassionate service.

“The addition of this new facility is part of our planned capacity expansion across the country and will allow us to serve even more people in the region.”

Currently under construction, the new facility will have a total capacity of 325 beds and offer advanced healthcare services, including oncology services with radiotherapy.

Phase one of the hospital with 225 beds is expected to become operational within the next 12 months.

Apollo plans to add 700 more beds in the region over the coming three years, bringing the overall bed capacity to 2,500.

This move comes shortly after Manipal Hospitals bought an 84% stake in Kolkata-based AMRI Hospitals.
