Aspirus Iron River Hospital and Clinics and the Iron Area Health Foundation (IAHF) have launched a programme for the safe disposal of needles, syringes and medications in Michigan, US.
The Sharps and Medication Disposal Program aims to provide options for disposing of these items safely in Crystal Falls, Iron River and nearby communities.
It has established sharps disposal containers at the main entrances of Aspirus Crystal Falls Clinic and Aspirus Iron River Hospital, as well as Medication Drop Boxes at the Iron River Police Department and the Iron County Sheriff's Department in Crystal Falls.
Aspirus Iron River Nursing director Taylor Taylor said: “We are thrilled to collaborate with the Iron Area Health Foundation to bring this important initiative to our community.
“The health and safety of our community is our top priority, and this programme ensures that individuals have a responsible way to dispose of both sharp objects and medications in safe, accessible locations.”
The Sharps and Medication Disposal Program is a joint effort to provide accessible and sustainable healthcare solutions, ensuring responsible disposal practices for hazardous materials that could affect both individual health and community welfare.
The proper disposal of sharps and medications is critical to prevent accidental injuries, the spread of infectious diseases, and damage to the environment.
Iron Area Health Foundation executive director Lyle Smithson Jr said: “We’re proud to partner with Aspirus Health on this critical project.
“By providing these disposal stations, we’re helping to prevent accidents, reduce misuse, and keep our community healthier.
“The collaboration between our two organisations highlights the strength of local partnerships in addressing public health issues.”
Based in Wisconsin, Aspirus Health serves north-eastern Minnesota, northern and central Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
The health system currently operates 18 hospitals and 130 outpatient locations with nearly 14,000 team members.
