US-based healthcare network Baptist Health has begun construction of the Al and Jane Nahmad Women's Cancer Center on its Baptist Hospital campus in Florida.

The facility is named after Al and Jane Nahmad, who have given significant financial support to the Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute.

Due to be completed by the end of 2026, the facility will cover 155,000ft² within the new Keeley Pavilion, providing a dedicated space for women's cancer care.

It aims to enhance care for patients in Florida and extend its reach to those from Latin America and the Caribbean.

The expansion is intended to allow the Miami Cancer Institute to expand its clinical teams, increase research trials and utilise the latest cancer-fighting technologies.

Al and Jane Nahmad have been providing support and volunteer work at Baptist Health for more than 20 years.

Al Nahmad served as chair of the Miami Cancer Institute's Operating Board during a period of significant growth at the institute, which opened in 2017.

Baptist Health president and CEO Bo Boulenger said: “Today is an exciting day as we break ground on our new Women's Cancer Center.

“Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Nahmad family and all of our donors, we will be able to offer highly personalised treatments and expand our research capabilities, all while keeping patients close to home and to their support systems.

“This centre is a testament to our commitment to excellence and innovation in cancer care at Miami Cancer Institute and will serve as a beacon of hope for women and their families for generations to come.”

Earlier this year, Baptist Health opened a 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

Located at 11800 Bluegrass Parkway, the centre was developed in partnership with Encompass Health, which operates the US' largest network of rehabilitation hospitals.
