US-based paediatric care provider BayCare is planning to build a facility for St Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa, Florida.

The facility will be built on the existing campus at West Dr Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard and is expected to be completed by 2030.

It will be the fourth new hospital project undertaken by BayCare over the past five years.

BayCare currently operates 16 hospitals in the Tampa Bay region.

The facility is part of the company's plan to improve local paediatric expertise and serve as a destination hospital offering high-acuity paediatric services, research and medical innovation for the region.

The financial details of the project, including the cost of the new facility, have not been disclosed.

BayCare plans to expand its network of multi-speciality, non-hospital paediatric clinics to boost access to care for patients and their families.

It also intends to expand the paediatric graduate medical education programmes, which include teaching, research and training.

BayCare CEO and president Stephanie Conners said: "From its founding, BayCare has been about serving its communities, who deserve the highest-quality healthcare.

“BayCare wants West Central Florida's children and families to continue to have access close to home to the best in medical care that combines the latest treatment innovations with our unmatched compassionate care. These investments will make that possible.”

To support the new hospital facility, the St Joseph's Children's Hospital Foundation is planning a philanthropic campaign.

Founded in 1990 and featuring 219 beds, St Joseph’s Children’s shares its campus with St Joseph’s Hospital.

Last year, the children’s facility handled 13,000 births, around 4,900 outpatient surgeries and 35,000 emergency room cases.

St Joseph’s Hospital also includes Steinbrenner Emergency/Trauma Centre and the Daniel J Plasencia, MD Children’s Chronic Complex Clinic.

BayCare also has paediatric specialty clinics in Clearwater, Valrico, North Tampa, Riverview and Polk County.

Patient consumerism is gaining momentum

Healthcare is evolving from a ‘doctor knows best’ mentality to a patient-doctor relationship where the patient takes an active role in making informed healthcare decisions. Patients can have more of a say in their healthcare decisions because they have access to information through various means, including the literature, the internet, and more recently, different types of connected medical devices. With the rise of mobile health applications, wearable technologies, and telemedicine, patients are well-situated to gain medical information, and ultimately make the best choices for their health.
