Boston VA Medical Center places order for Nexstim’s technology

The NBS 5+ system is used for non-invasive, presurgical mapping of motor cortices before neurosurgery.

July 31 2023

The Boston VA Medical Center in the US has placed an order for a new navigated brain stimulation (NBS) 5+ system, including NexSpeech from Finnish medical technology company Nexstim.

The system will be used at the hospital to map epilepsy patients, potentially aiding in their neurosurgery.

It is used for non-invasive, presurgical mapping of motor cortices before neurosurgery, and with the NexSpeech module addition, speech cortices can also be mapped non-invasively.

The NBS System 5 is the sole Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved and CE-marked navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) system designed for pre-surgical mapping of both speech and motor cortices in the brain.

Nexstim focuses on providing personalised and effective diagnostics and therapies for brain diseases and disorders.

Nexstim CEO Mikko Karvinen said: “We are very happy to see our NBS systems continued expansion in helping more US neurosurgeons treat epilepsy patients.

“Presurgical mapping of the brain with our technology offers the chance to improve outcomes and patient’s quality of life.

“We warmly welcome Boston VA Hospital to our user community.”

Last month, Nexstim received an order for the NBS 5+ system from a customer in the US to be used for neuroscience purposes.

The system is said to combine Nexstim's NBS and Navigated Brain Therapy (NBT) systems, both utilising the company’s unique nTMS technology.
