Fraser Health and the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) in British Columbia (BC), a province in Canada, have chosen the construction team for the second phase of the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project.

The preferred proponent team, PCL Constructors Westcoast and Parkin Architects Western, entered a single-target outturn cost alliance development agreement last month.

This multi-party agreement will facilitate the collaboration between the owner, builder, and designer for full project delivery.

Construction work is planned to begin in late 2025, with the facilities expected to be operational by 2030.

The total investment for this phase is around C$1.7bn ($1.2bn), with contributions from the Burnaby Hospital Foundation, the Province, and BC Cancer Foundation.

Under this phase, the selected companies will focus on the construction of the Keith and Betty Beedie Acute Care Tower, which will have a total of 160 private rooms to support a wide range of medical services.

These services include cardiac telemetry, general medicine, and medical oncology, along with a spiritual care suite, a new medical imaging department and public spaces.

The tower will also host the new BC Cancer—Burnaby McCarthy Centre, which will be equipped with 31 chemotherapy chairs, 54 ambulatory-care rooms, an oncology pharmacy, spaces for clinical trials/research, and cancer treatment equipment, including two PET/CT scanners.

In addition to the new tower, Phase II further involves the demolition of the West Wing building, expanding the existing emergency department to include 104 treatment spaces, and renovating the endoscopy and laboratory areas.

In April, Phase I of the redevelopment reached a significant milestone when two cranes were removed from the site.

This initial phase, led by EllisDon, includes the construction of a new healthcare pavilion, which is projected to be completed by 2025.

Additional upgrades are being made to the Jim Pattison Surgery Centre and other support areas within the hospital.

BC Health Minister Adrian Dix said: “With Phase I of the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project well underway, Fraser Health is taking more major strides. I’m excited that we’ve reached this milestone because it means we are closer to beginning design and construction for Phase II.”
