The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Canada is establishing the Temerty Discovery Centre, a mental health research facility in Toronto.

The centre is being developed as part of the fourth and final phase of the CAMH's extensive 25-year redevelopment plan.

It is named after the Temerty Foundation, which provided a C$75m ($54.7m) donation for its development.

CAMH president and CEO Sarah Downey said: “The Temerty family have been long-time champions for CAMH and mental health.

“We are grateful that they have continued to invest in groundbreaking mental health research that leads to better mental health care and outcomes for all.”

Once open, the facility will serve as a hub for CAMH researchers to increase their understanding of brain science and mental health and illnesses.

Temerty Discovery Centre has 385,000ft² of collaborative space and will consolidate CAMH's research programmes, fostering breakthroughs in mental health treatment.

It will house more than two-thirds of CAMH's 1,400 research staff and enable a 43% increase in staff members, researchers, students and trainees.

CAMH said that patients and families will benefit from the centre's proximity to care areas, with dedicated spaces to participate in research.

This setup aims to ensure that new findings can be quickly integrated into clinical practice to enhance patient outcomes.

CAMH Foundation president and CEO Deborah Gillis said: “The Temerty Discovery Centre will make a difference in the lives of the people CAMH serves now and for generations to come.

“Thank you to the Temerty family and all those who have supported it for helping CAMH build a future where no one is left behind.”

CAMH employs more than 5,000 professionals and is affiliated with the University of Toronto and recognised as a Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre.
