US-based paediatric healthcare system Children's Health is to develop a paediatric health campus in Dallas, Texas, in partnership with the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center.

The $5bn campus will be built on an area of more than 33 acres and feature a children's hospital with two 12-storey towers and an eight-storey tower, which will replace the current Children's Medical Center Dallas.

It will be located on the UT Southwestern Campus at the intersection of Harry Hines Boulevard and Mockingbird Lane, across from UTSW's William P Clements Jr University Hospital, in Dallas' Southwestern Medical District.

Expected to open within the next seven years, the new campus will have a Level I paediatric trauma centre, 90 emergency exam rooms, operating rooms, 24 observation rooms and two helicopter pads.

It will be linked to the Clements University Hospital via a connector bridge to facilitate seamless care transitions, particularly for infants requiring specialised care in the Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.

The campus will also have a foetal care centre to offer advanced services for complex maternal and foetal health issues, including foetal surgery capabilities, as well as an outpatient clinic building.

The development is part of Children's Health's ongoing efforts to address the region's growing paediatric medical and surgical needs, including the opening of a Plano hospital tower later this year and occupying a floor at the UT Southwestern Medical Center at RedBird from next year.
