CMR Surgical introduces digital tool to improve surgical care

Hospitals can use the tool to monitor efficiencies and identify areas for improvement.

UK-based medical device company CMR Surgical has introduced Versius Clinical Insights, a digital tool designed to provide hospitals and surgeons with data and insights from surgical procedures.

The tool combines telemetry data, clinical information and surgical videos to offer insights into surgical performance and patient outcomes.

Surgeons using it can access clinical outcomes, compare data with global benchmarks, review digital case records, watch procedure videos and export case data for assessments.

CMR Surgical chief medical officer and co-founder Mark Slack said: “It may seem like a small tweak we’re making, but I can’t emphasise enough how important this could be for surgeons and hospitals going forward.

“Versius has always been a digitally enabled robot, and we’ve gained so many insights from thousands of cases in our CMR Clinical Registry, alongside existing surgical videos and robotic telemetry data.

“But combining that together in one place will give real-time clinical insights. It’s a kind of digital intelligence that surgeons have never been able to have before. That can only be a good thing for patients.”

The tool’s functionality can be accessed through CMR's existing digital apps, Versius Connect and Versius Team.

Hospitals can also use the tool to monitor efficiencies and identify areas for improvement.

Versius Clinical Insights is initially being implemented in two hospitals in Wales, namely Cardiff University Health Board and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, with plans for a worldwide launch in future.

Cardiff University Health Board colorectal consultant and general surgeon James Ansell said: “As surgeons, we always want the best for our patients, and we can only improve their clinical outcomes by learning from previous clinical experience.

“With Versius, we now have all the relevant information we need at our fingertips, and by combining it we can get real clinical insights, which will help to improve our clinical and patient outcomes.”

Is it time for the healthcare sector to fully embrace the benefits of digitalization and AI?

Primarily due to COVID-19, the healthcare sector has witnessed an acceleration in digital transformation, which has improved efficiencies and enhanced patient outcomes. AI can revolutionize the drug discovery process and significantly reduce the time and cost to get a drug to market, particularly in areas of unmet need. However, using healthcare data for AI development raises data privacy concerns, thereby limiting its adoption.
