Commons Clinic sets up Centre for SEOR to improve spinal care

The centre aims to support spinal care interventions by training orthopaedists and promoting the adoption of spine care models.

US-based speciality health system Commons Clinic has established the Centre for Spine Economics, Outcomes & Research (SEOR) to implement care models for treating spine conditions.

The centre will introduce a centre-of-excellence programme for spinal restoration, with a focus on biologic treatments and minimally invasive or ultra-minimally invasive procedures.

Over the next ten years, Commons Clinic is committing $100m to enhance the delivery of ambulatory spinal care.

The Centre for SEOR's programming will be led by founding physicians Dr Hyun Bae and Dr Sanjay Khurana, who will also promote the centre's 'high-value' spine model to upcoming spine specialists and partners.

The facility will use a 'full stack' approach that includes physician-led clinical programmes, surgery centre capabilities, modern care management technology, evidence-based research and transparent payment models.

This approach is designed to shift musculoskeletal (MSK) care from traditional hospital systems to community-based accountable care networks.

The Centre for SEOR will also work with the Commons Clinic physician group to help redefine the framework of an integrated delivery network.

Commons Clinic said that the centre's programming will have five main pillars, namely a centre-of-excellence for spinal restoration, a technology lab, a payment innovation coalition, a research institute and a post-fellowship training programme.

Commons Clinic CEO and co-founder Nick Aubin said: “Affordable spinal care outcomes are possible with the right delivery network and care model, but change will not come from within, as hospital-based systems and the orthodoxy of academic medicine lack the incentive to innovate.

“With the Centre for SEOR, Commons Clinic is committing to a multi-decade investment with sole mission of reversing societal burden of low back pain and spine maladies.

“If we succeed, we will pioneer novel approaches for spinal care, train a new generation of physician-leaders, and catalyse a multi-billion-dollar savings opportunity for one of the most egregious failures of the US healthcare system.”
