Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Hamilton in the US, part of RWJBarnabas Health, has initiated the construction of a new cardiac catheterisation laboratory (cath lab).
The 5,500ft² facility, aiming to broaden access to advanced heart and vascular services, is set to open in January 2025.
It will offer a range of procedures, including percutaneous coronary intervention, which is a minimally invasive technique for opening blocked arteries in heart, temporary pacemaker insertion, carotid stenting, loop recorder insertion, and angioplasties.
Last year, RWJUH Hamilton conducted 1,500 diagnostic and 443 interventional procedures, marking a significant increase from 2022.
The hospital's capability to perform elective angioplasty was approved by the New Jersey Department of Health in 2022, allowing local residents to receive high-quality cardiac care close to home.
RWJUH Hamilton senior vice-president and chief medical officer Seth Rosenbaum said: “The new cath lab will further expedite the outstanding care our specialised clinicians provide on a daily basis, and provide patients suffering from heart attacks and other heart and vascular conditions life-saving care, close to home.”
RWJUH Hamilton provides a comprehensive suite of heart and vascular services to Mercer County and the broader five-county region of New Jersey.
Its heart and vascular services offer a multidisciplinary, patient-centric and integrated approach, which aligns with national quality standards.
The hospital is also home to a Cancer Center, in partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, offering access to latest treatments and clinical trials.
RWJUH Hamilton board of trustees chair Nina Melker said: “We are so proud of the cardiac programme and our accomplishments which span over the past year at RWJUH Hamilton. I am also grateful for our partnerships, support and fundraising which have allowed us to expand our cardiac services and meet the increasing needs of our local communities and its residents.”
