UNSW Sydney has announced the start of construction on the new Lang Walker AO Medical Research Building – Macarthur, a A$55m ($35.7m) facility set to house the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research – Macarthur.

The new medical research facility in South Western Sydney, Australia, is poised to drive innovation in medical research, focusing on improving patient outcomes across five key health areas.

It will be dedicated to advancing studies in mental health, indigenous health, diabetes, paediatrics & child wellbeing and addiction medicine.

The establishment of the new facility is part of a larger health infrastructure investment, aligning with the New South Wales Government's A$632m ($410.2m) redevelopment of Campbelltown Hospital and the Campbelltown Health and Education Precinct.

Upon completion, the facility will provide researchers and clinicians with new technologies, laboratories and collaborative spaces.

This will not only bolster local health services but also contribute to research with national and international implications.

The facility will also aid in improving community access to clinical trials, addressing local health requirements while fostering research that resonates on a global scale.

Western Sydney University vice-chancellor and president, professor Barney Glover AO said: “This is an investment in the future of the fast-growing and diverse south western Sydney region, driving positive outcomes across health, research and the community.”

Health Minister Ryan Park said: “NSW has some of the brightest minds and it is facilities like these that ensure we retain and develop the skills of our highly trained clinicians.

“This facility will create fantastic opportunities to develop new treatments, therapies and look for innovative methods for treating patients in our healthcare system.”

The project is a collaborative effort involving South Western Sydney Local Health District, Western Sydney University, the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research, UNSW Sydney, and the support of Walker Corporation.

The Lang Walker AO Medical Research Building - Macarthur is scheduled for opening next year.
