Construction is in progress on the MHIPU at Royal Darwin Hospital in Tiwi, Northern Territory, Australia.
Royal Darwin Hospital offers a wide range of healthcare services, including general medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, cardiology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, and rheumatology, among others.
The new MHIPU is being set up to enhance acute mental health services in the region.
It is in line with the government’s commitment to increase healthcare access for all Territorians.
Northern Territory Chief Minister Eva Lawler: “All Territorians deserve access to quality mental health services [and] this facility will bolster capacity at Royal Darwin Hospital and provide a more therapeutic environment for mental health patients.”
Australian construction company Sitzler is the managing contractor for the new unit and is overseeing the construction work. The MHIPU design was completed by Ashford Architects and the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) upgrade was by Hames Sharley.
The government highlighted that the main building's pad is 80% complete and the pier footings and retaining walls for the ground slab are 75% complete.
Construction of the ground slab and columns is expected to begin later this month.
The MHIPU will span three levels, offering 18 inpatient beds, support services, and a six-bed SARA.
An enclosed walkway will connect the unit to the emergency department, providing seamless access for patients.
SARA will serve as a short-term care facility, offering a therapeutic environment for mental health clients from the emergency department who require detailed assessment and referral to ongoing care providers.
The CSSD will also be upgraded to adhere to more stringent reprocessing standards for reusable medical devices.
This project is due to be completed in 2025 and will create 350 jobs for contractors, apprentices, and Aboriginal workers.
