Construction is in progress on the new 112-bed public ward block at the Joondalup Health Campus in Western Australia (WA).

The new five-storey building will feature a 30-bed medical and surgical inpatient ward along with a 16-bed cardiac care unit.

It will be connected to the main hospital building and also to the recently completed 102-bed mental health unit.

This project forms part of an A$270m ($177.12m) expansion of the campus.

It will support the hospital's surgical services expansion, including a new operating theatre and catheterisation lab, and more clinical support areas.

This expansion also includes new post anaesthesia care unit bed bays, pre-surgery holding bays and a larger anaesthetic room.

It will facilitate emergency and elective care, covering various specialities such as orthopaedic and general surgery, ear, nose, and throat procedures, urology, vascular surgery, and cancer surgery.

This development is co-funded by the state and Commonwealth governments.

The initiative, stemming from a 2017 WA Labor election commitment, has seen the launch of the mental health unit, expanded emergency department, and staff car park.

WA Premier Roger Cook said: “Joondalup Health Campus is a major medical hub and the significant upgrades we are undertaking will only cement its value to the local community in our northern suburbs.”

WA Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said: “The extensive expansion underway at Joondalup Health Campus is moving at speed to enable the hospital to continue to deliver high-quality care to more public patients.

“The community is experiencing the benefits of new facilities already opened as part of the project including the new mental health unit, new emergency department beds, and more parking.”
