Corewell Health is set to inaugurate a new paediatric medical psychiatric unit at its Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, US.
Scheduled to open this year, the paediatric medical psychiatric unit is claimed to be the first such facility in the state.
The new 12-bed unit will be dedicated to treating children with behavioural health issues alongside additional medical complexities.
It will be staffed by a multidisciplinary team, including psychologists, psychiatrists, medical physicians, child life specialists, nurses, chaplains, pharmacists, and social workers.
The team will focus on creating tailored, comprehensive care plans to address both medical and behavioural health needs.
Financial backing for the unit includes a $5m contribution from the State of Michigan, supplemented by $4m in donations from the community.
Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital president Robert Fitzgerald said: “The medical psychiatric unit will be pivotal in how we care for kids and we’re grateful for the support in this endeavour.”
Located at 100 Michigan St NE, Grand Rapids, the hospital provides specialised care through more than 300 paediatric providers across over 70 programmes, covering oncology, congenital heart diseases, emergency and trauma, genetics, orthopaedics, and neurosciences.
Corewell Health behavioural health department chief and vice-president Subodh Jain said: “There is a critical need for behavioural health services nationwide, and we’re thrilled to be able to offer this exceptional service to the paediatric patients in Michigan.
“In addition to enhancing collaboration with our community partners, this new unit will provide a better experience for both patients and team members.”
