Australia's Queensland Government has initiated early construction works to expand and redevelop Redcliffe Hospital.

This development entails an investment of more than A$1.1bn ($715.6m) and aims to deliver a larger and more advanced hospital for the growing local community in Redcliffe, Queensland.

Announced in July 2022, the project features the construction of a new nine-storey Clinical Services Building.

It will also include the addition of 204 new beds and the expansion of a variety of services, including emergency, birthing suites, theatres, endoscopy, and several other clinical and support services.

Multiplex Constructions, the managing contractor for the project, has outlined plans that are expected to create more than 2,500 jobs during the construction phase.

According to the government, this expansion is designed to facilitate a more integrated service delivery model.

Multiplex said that the project will see the construction of a new ambulatory care building, which will be combined with the clinical services building into a single integrated facility.

This ambulatory care building is anticipated to become operational in the latter half of 2026, followed by the clinical services building in the second half of 2027.

With a phased approach to completion, the entire Redcliffe Hospital expansion project is due for completion by 2028, subject to weather and construction conditions.

It is part of the Queensland government's commitment to healthcare, which includes delivering 11 major hospital expansions and constructing three new hospitals in Coomera, Bundaberg, and Toowoomba.

The Big Hospital Build is expected to add almost 2,200 beds to Queensland’s hospital network.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles said: “We have more than A$14bn committed to deliver new and expanded hospitals right around the state, and are on track to build our critical health workforce by almost 10,000 this term of government.

“This major expansion will add an extra 204 beds and five new operating theatres to meet the demand of our growing Moreton Bay region. We are injecting A$2.6bn into infrastructure upgrades across the region because we know it’s what locals want and need.”
