Essen University Hospital (UME) in Germany is partnering with Luscii, a digital health platform, to facilitate remote monitoring of patients suffering from respiratory diseases.

Luscii is collaborating with the Department of Infectiology at UME, which is headed by Professor Dr Oliver Witzke.

The latest initiative is a key component of UME's 'Smart Hospital' strategy, aimed at enhancing patient care at home and boosting patient satisfaction.

As part of this pilot project, the UME is conducting a feasibility analysis using Luscii's software as a medical device (SaMD) to monitor patients with pneumonia.

The medical staff will utilise the clinical engine of the Luscii platform to provide targeted support and interaction with participating patients.

This 12-month pilot phase will be scientifically evaluated by UME, with the possibility of expanding its application to other diseases, if successful.

The project explores the fundamental benefits of telemonitoring, such as facilitating a quicker return to the familiar home environment and reducing unnecessary visits to the clinic, outpatient department and emergency room.

Patients in the pilot project are equipped with the Luscii app, which allows them to input data along a structured treatment path for pneumonia, including symptoms, vital signs, and responses to specific questionnaires.

The app is part of Luscii's home monitoring platform, which is used by hospitals, general practitioners, and community healthcare providers across 11 countries in Europe and Africa, covering over 150 medical conditions.

Witzke said: “Pneumonias continue to pose a significant health problem. The emergence of remote monitoring instruments offers a promising opportunity to optimise patient care in infectious diseases.”

For Luscii, the latest partnership with UME marks its entry into the German market.

Luscii founder and healthcare digital transformation expert Professor Dr Daan Dohmen said: “Luscii has proven itself in the everyday care of clinicians and patients for over a decade. We are confident that we can now demonstrate the great benefits of Luscii in Germany.”

In September 2023, Luscii collaborated with US-based company Jamf to enable remote patient monitoring via iPads for millions of patients globally.

Healthcare industry continues to be highly vulnerable to cyberattacks

Cybersecurity is a growing market in the medical devices sector for several reasons. Medical devices often collect and contain vulnerable data, such as patient medical information. Legacy medical devices are a cause for concern because they likely were not designed with cyberattacks in mind. With the adoption of EHR systems, telemedicine measures, mobile health apps, and other connected devices, there is increased vulnerability to cyberattacks.
