FAIR Health introduces new Opioid Tracker

FAIR Health’s repository of more than 42 billion private healthcare claim records is the source of the data.

US-based FAIR Health has rolled out a free, interactive tool, tracking opioid abuse and dependence state by state.

Dubbed Opioid Tracker, the new tool consists of a heat map that provides opioid dependence claim lines as a percentage of all medical claim lines in 2022 state by state.

An infographic can be accessed by clicking on a particular state.

The infographic offers the top five procedure codes by utilisation for opioid abuse and dependence, and the top five procedure codes by aggregate allowed amounts for opioid abuse and dependence.

It also provides the change in opioid abuse and dependence claim lines as a percentage of all medical claim lines from 2018 to 2022, as well as opioid abuse and dependence diagnoses by age and gender.

FAIR Health’s repository of over 42 billion private healthcare claim records is the source of the data.

The new tracker revealed that H0020 (methadone administration and/or service) had the highest utilisation nationally of all procedure codes for opioid abuse and dependence last year.

With 9.8% of aggregate allowed amounts attributable to procedure codes for opioid abuse and dependence last year, the H0018 stood at first place in ranking for total spending across the nation for opioid abuse and dependence.

The medical claim lines percentage for opioid abuse and dependence from 2018 to 2022 witnessed an overall drop from 0.254% in 2018 to 0.196% in 2022.

In 2022, patients aged between 31 and 40 have the highest percentage of opioid abuse and dependence claim lines with 31.1%.

Males represented 62.5% of claim lines with opioid abuse and dependence diagnoses, and the females accounted for 37.5% across the nation last year.

FAIR Health president Robin Gelburd said: “The Opioid Tracker sheds light on multiple aspects of opioid abuse and dependence, including utilisation, costs, age and gender.”

The organisation’s other trackers include the Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker and the Cost of Giving Birth Tracker.

Patient consumerism is gaining momentum

Healthcare is evolving from a ‘doctor knows best’ mentality to a patient-doctor relationship where the patient takes an active role in making informed healthcare decisions. Patients can have more of a say in their healthcare decisions because they have access to information through various means, including the literature, the internet, and more recently, different types of connected medical devices. With the rise of mobile health applications, wearable technologies, and telemedicine, patients are well-situated to gain medical information, and ultimately make the best choices for their health.
