The construction of the Guyana Paediatric and Maternal Hospital in Ogle, Guyana, is in progress and due to be completed by the end of next year.

Guyanese Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony recently visited the site in East Coast Demerara to review the development.

Anthony was accompanied by Guyana’s Permanent Secretary Malcolm Watkins and other representatives from VAMED Engineering and VIKAB Guyana, which are both involved in the project.

The visit aimed to oversee the ongoing development and construction work and evaluate the onsite progress made so far.

The 256-bed facility is being built to provide comprehensive healthcare services for mothers and children.

It will also provide a wide range of services to address the healthcare needs of mothers, particularly women of childbearing age.

The project has been described as a 'pivotal milestone' in Guyana's healthcare infrastructure, with its design and land preparation completed in February last year.

The contract for the hospital was signed in June 2022. It is being built by Austrian company VAMED.

According to a press release from Guyana’s Department of Public Information, the development is part of a 2018 agreement between the Austrian and Guyanese governments for the construction of health facilities in Guyana.

The Paediatric and Maternal Hospital is being developed with an investment of GYD12.4bn ($57.02m), which was allocated in the country's 2022 budget for its design and construction.

The hospital will feature specialised services, including a paediatric cardiac unit equipped to perform surgeries on children.

Its development is part of the Guyanese Government’s efforts to bolster local healthcare access and service delivery.

In July 2022, Guyanese President Dr Irfaan Ali announced the launch of a national healthcare initiative to provide quality and accessible healthcare for the country’s citizens.

The government will work with healthcare provider Mount Sinai Health System and Hess Corporation on the national initiative.
