Henry Ford Health has officially launched the construction of its significant $2.2bn campus expansion project, named 'Destination: Grand', in Detroit, US.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new campus took place on 12 September, attended by team members, patients, neighbours, and partners of Henry Ford Health.

The expansion includes the development of a new hospital facility covering 1.2 million-square-feet on the south side of West Grand Boulevard, opposite the existing campus.

A highlight of this expansion project is the 20-storey patient tower, featuring a partnership with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab for intensive inpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation services.

The Gilbert Family Foundation has facilitated this collaboration, with an investment of $130m investment.

In addition, the emergency department will expand to 75,000ft², offering 100 private treatment spaces.

The 432 patient rooms will be equipped with features such as touchscreen TVs and voice activation, enhancing comfort and convenience.

The facility will also have 28 new operating rooms and five floors of specialised ICU rooms.

Shirley Ryan AbilityLab's presence in the new tower emphasises Henry Ford Health's dedication to high quality physical medicine and rehabilitation care.

The Gilbert Family Foundation has also established a $10m fund to aid uninsured Detroit residents in accessing these services.

The project also includes a 185,000ft² shared services building, which will have a loading dock, sterile processing facilities, the hospital’s kitchen, a new parking structure, and a 46,000ft² Central Energy Hub, which will contribute to the hospital becoming a fully electric-capable building.

This expansion is central to The Future of Health: Detroit vision, aiming to transform the New Center neighbourhood into a community hub.

It involves collaborations with Tom Gores, the Detroit Pistons, and Michigan State University, and includes a medical research centre, as well as housing, retail, and recreational spaces.

The new hospital facility is expected to open in 2029.

Henry Ford Health president and CEO Bob Riney said: “Our vision, to build the healthcare campus of the future, a place where people from down the street or across the globe alike can come to receive the very best care in the very best facilities, is one we’ve been cultivating for decades.

“We are creating a place like no other in the state, and through this major expansion of our campus, we are cementing our commitment to our Detroit community for the next century and beyond. Detroit deserves this.”
