Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has relocated its oncology and lymphedema outpatient physiotherapy department to the Qatar Rehabilitation Institute (QRI).

The relocation from the National Center for Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR) is aimed at enhancing the level of patient-centred care provided to cancer and lymphedema patients in Qatar.

HMC long-term care, rehabilitation and geriatric care deputy chief Dr Hanadi Al-Hamad said: “Integrating the oncology and lymphedema outpatient physiotherapy department into QRI allows us to offer a more seamless, comprehensive approach to holistic rehabilitation.

“This move not only optimises our resources but also strengthens our ability to provide personalised, patient-centred care.”

The oncology and lymphedema outpatient physiotherapy department now features separate therapy areas for male and female patients, enhancing the privacy and comfort of those undergoing treatment.

A cancer rehabilitation expert team and certified lymphedema therapists provide cancer rehabilitation, palliative support, and lymphedema management, catering to the specific needs of each patient.

The department's services are available from 7am to 9pm, increasing accessibility for those in need of care.

Al-Hamad added: “Lymphedema is a swelling that can occur in any part of the body but is commonly seen in the arms and legs. While it can be hereditary, it is often caused by the removal of lymph nodes, trauma, abdominal surgeries, or cancer, and specifically exposure to radiation therapy or removal of the lymph nodes and vessels as part of cancer treatments.”

The department operates using a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach, working with various teams within HMC, including oncology/haematology, palliative care, breast, head and neck, and bone marrow transplant MDTs, as well as vascular and plastic surgery specialists.

This approach assists patients in recovering crucial motor abilities, averts long-term disabilities, and ultimately enhances health outcomes.

By relocating to QRI and expanding services at the Medical Care & Research Center (MCRC), the initiative seeks to reduce waiting times for appointments, thus facilitating faster access to vital rehabilitation services.

The new facilities are designed to adhere to international standards of care.
