Canadian healthcare group Horizon Health Network has broken ground on a coronary care unit (CCU) at The Moncton Hospital in New Brunswick, Canada.

The C$56m ($41.28m) project is a collaboration between Horizon, Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation and the New Brunswick government.

Scheduled to be completed in June 2026, the two-floor unit is being built on Arden Street near the Dr Sheldon H Rubin Oncology Clinic.

It will include eight coronary care beds and a 30-bed cardiac/medical unit for patients suffering from various heart conditions, as well as multiple private rooms for cardiac patients and their families.

The CCU will add nearly 28,000ft² of floor space to the hospital, providing a larger space for cardiac care.

The project will involve relocating and expanding the hospital's existing cardiac intensive care and cardiac/medical units, which will be adjacent to each other in the new CCU.

Extraordinary Care Campaign chair Robert Irving said: “When we kicked off the Extraordinary Care Campaign, which helped raise funds for this new unit, we knew we had an ambitious goal.

"As a community, we were able to surpass our goal and raise C$10.1m.

"The new Coronary Care Unit will help the exceptional healthcare team at The Moncton Hospital deliver world-class care to our neighbours and community.”

New Brunswick Health Minister Bruce Fitch said: “This investment in a new Coronary Care Unit at The Moncton Hospital supports the government’s efforts to improve the health care system.

“This means more New Brunswickers with heart issues will be able to be treated and will also allow some patients operated on at the Heart Centre in St John to be transferred to the Moncton CCU more rapidly.

“This is one more way we’re working to ensure access to primary healthcare and surgery for all New Brunswickers through the provincial health plan, Stabilizing Health Care: An Urgent Call to Action.”
