Humber River Health, a North American hospital, has inaugurated Schulich Family Medicine Teaching Unit (Schulich FMTU) to expand its primary care access in Northwest Toronto, Canada.

The new unit, which is intended to meet the critical shortage of primary care providers in Northwest Toronto, will be equipped to provide immediate healthcare access to the community.

The Schulich Family Medicine Teaching Unit will serve as an official teaching site of the University of Toronto's Family Medicine Residency Program.

Humber’s new unit provides specialised training for first and second-year medical residents seeking to become family physicians.

Humber River Health president and CEO Barb Collins said: "The Schulich Family Medicine Teaching Unit is a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to developing the future of primary care in our community and provides care closer to home.”

The Schulich Foundation director Judy Schulich said: “It is our privilege to support Humber and help increase access to family doctors in the community, as well as train future medical professionals so desperately needed today.”

Expected to increase to comprehensive primary care access, the new unit will offer a several interdisciplinary services through the Humber River Family Health Team.

In a press statement, Humber River Health said: “This endeavour not only promotes academic excellence but also empowers residents to establish their own family practices within our community, ensuring more families have ongoing access to high-quality care.”

The hospital operates on three sites with a total of 4,000 employees, 700 physicians and 500 volunteers.
