Kalaignar Hospital in Chennai, India opens cath lab 

The cath lab will perform angiograms, stent implantations, and pacemaker installations, among others.

The Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital (KCSSH) in Chennai, in Indian state of Tamil Nadu has inaugurated a new cath lab, costing Rs67.4m ($0.81m), reported chennaionline.com

This marks the 25th such facility in the state and the fifth in a government hospital in Chennai.  

The cath lab is equipped to perform various procedures, including angiograms, stent implantations, pacemaker installations, valve replacement surgeries, and paediatric heart surgeries. 

According to DT Next news portal, Tamil Nadu Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma. Subramanian said: “The Cath lab facilities are available in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Stanley Medical College and Hospital, Omandurar Government Hospital and Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital.  

“However, in order to provide the facility to the residents of Central parts of the city and suburban areas, the facility was launched at the Kalaignar Super Speciality Hospital.  

“This is the 25th such facility in the government hospitals in the State.  

“Another facility will be set up at Thiruvarur Government Hospital in the coming days.” 

The minister announced plans for the establishment of a 26th cath lab at Tiruvarur Government Medical College Hospital and initiatives to set up four more such facilities.  

Since the inauguration of KCSSH six months ago, the hospital has treated over 88,000 outpatients, performed 687 surgeries, and received Rs4.47bn in funds for infrastructure and medical equipment. 

The minister mentioned the government's initiative to provide emergency loading doses for heart ailments at primary health centres, benefiting over 4,771 patients at primary health centers and 370 at sub-centers, as per Times of India

Additionally, he announced the organisation of an international medical conference by the state health department during 18 to 20 January at the Chennai Trade Center.
