Canada's British Columbia Government has announced the completion of the pharmacy and ambulatory care project at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH).

The project required an investment of C$38.8m ($28.3m) and is intended to improve access to care for people in Trail, Canada.

It was supported by C$23.3m of funding from the provincial government and C$15.5m from the West Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital District.

The KBRH Health Foundation secured an additional C$1.1m to support the current and future requirements of the ambulatory care departments.

The project's construction began in 2020 and covered the development of a new ambulatory care wing, a renovated oncology department, an expanded pharmacy, an upgraded cast clinic and a modernised physiotherapy department.

The expanded pharmacy is now three times larger, with added facilities such as a private patient education room for consultations and improved ventilation to provide a safer environment for staff and patients.

The new ambulatory care wing was built on top of the expanded emergency department.

Ambulatory care offers outpatient procedures such as cystoscopies and endoscopies, as well as other minor surgical procedures.

West Kootenay-Boundary Regional Hospital District chair Frank Marino said: “Having worked at KBRH in past, I know how challenging the previous pharmacy and ambulatory care areas were so it is great to see these dramatic improvements completed.

“The modernisation of the hospital in Trail will benefit patients, physicians and staff for years to come.

“I want to thank the Province, Interior Health, the KBRH Health Foundation, my fellow regional hospital district representatives and our taxpayers for making all this possible.”

KBRH provides 24-hour emergency and trauma services, enhanced laboratory services, acute and obstetrical care, psychiatry and chemotherapy among other healthcare services.

The ambulatory care wing was opened in 2021 and features new procedure rooms, endoscopy suites and recovery rooms, new patient change rooms and natural light..
