The Queensland Government in Australia has selected local real estate company Lendlease to lead the design phase of the Queensland Cancer Centre, being built in Brisbane.

The cancer centre will sit within the Herston Health Precinct at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Queensland.

It is being developed with an investment of A$1.12bn ($739.46m), of which A$375m is being contributed by the Australian Government.

The remaining A$750m is being provided by the Queensland government, as part of a A$9.8bn infrastructure programme to revamp hospitals and health facilities across the state.

Work on the Queensland Cancer Centre will commence in the first half of 2024. It is expected to be completed by 2028.

Upon completion, the centre will feature 150 beds and offer various new cancer treatments.

These treatments include nuclear theranostic, cellular therapy and a new proton beam therapy, which is a specialised radiation therapy that can accurately target cancers near vital and vulnerable organs.

Queensland Cancer Centre will be one of the two facilities in Australia to offer proton beam therapy, the government said.

A team of medical and surgical specialists, including oncologists and radiation oncologists, along with nurses and allied health professionals will also be deployed at the new centre.

Furthermore, the centre will also work together with other cancer networks across Australia to research new diagnosis and treatment alternatives for cancer.

Queensland Health, Mental Health and Ambulance Services Minister and Women Minister Shannon Fentiman said: “Today’s announcement of the Queensland Cancer Centre is a landmark moment for cancer care in our state.

“This facility will include 150 beds and provide patients and their families access to state-of-the-art care, specialist treatments, and cutting-edge therapies, regardless of their location.

“The new centre will be one of only two facilities in the country to offer proton beam therapy, which can precisely target cancers near vital and vulnerable organs.”

In June 2022, the Queensland Government unveiled its plans to build the Brisbane Cancer Centre.
