Lifepoint Health in the US has announced the formation of a joint venture (JV) with Ascension Saint Thomas for advancing healthcare in Northern Middle Tennessee.

The JV aims to expand access to quality care and services in the region.

Together, the companies will own Highpoint Health System, which is owned by Lifepoint Health.

The health system includes Sumner Regional Medical Center and Sumner Station in Gallatin, Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage, Trousdale Medical Center in Hartsville and more than 15 affiliated clinics and care sites.

Lifepoint Health and Ascension Saint Thomas will collaborate to improve access to speciality care and clinical programmes for patients and communities.

Lifepoint Health chairman and CEO David Dill said: “We have long respected Ascension Saint Thomas for its commitment to excellent quality, innovation, and partnership in improving the lives of patients.

“By working together, we can do even more to advance the health and well-being of our friends and neighbours here.”

The hospitals and care sites that are part of the JV will be co-branded with Ascension Saint Thomas.

They will be mostly owned and operated by Lifepoint Health.

The Highpoint hospitals will adopt the names of Highpoint Health – Trousdale, Highpoint Health – Sumner, and Highpoint Health – Riverview, going forward.

The latest collaboration is the second JV partnership for the companies.

Ascension Saint Thomas and Lifepoint Health also together own Ascension Saint Thomas Rehabilitation Hospital in Nashville.

Ascension Saint Thomas president and CEO Fahad Tahir said: “Lifepoint is a strong and trusted partner, and we share a commitment to making communities healthier.

“The positive impact we can make together to build and expand our clinical programmes will have a multiplying effect on the health of our region and the communities we serve.”

In August 2022, Lifepoint Health signed a definitive agreement to acquire a majority ownership interest in behavioural healthcare services provider Springstone’s operating company.

Why are healthcare companies hesitant to invest in the metaverse?

Although metaverse technologies could reinvent healthcare approaches and bring new experiences to healthcare providers and patients, adoption is still at an early stage. There are currently few use cases in the healthcare industry. The metaverse needs to overcome major challenges for healthcare, including regulation and data privacy concerns.

Healthcare industry continues to be highly vulnerable to cyberattacks

Cybersecurity is a growing market in the medical devices sector for several reasons. Medical devices often collect and contain vulnerable data, such as patient medical information. Legacy medical devices are a cause for concern because they likely were not designed with cyberattacks in mind. With the adoption of EHR systems, telemedicine measures, mobile health apps, and other connected devices, there is increased vulnerability to cyberattacks.
